Wellness Meeting Minutes
Thursday, February 5, 2004
- Review the discussion from January 22nd meeting
- Discuss target population(s)
The group agreed to look at all 3 target populations - students,
staff, and faculty. There was also some discussion that possibly
1 or 2 of the priority health areas (see below) may not impact
all 3 target populations, and therefore, it would be up to each
priority health area subcommittee to identify the various populations they
will target for their action plan.
- Finalize priority health areas
The group agreed to narrow the priority health areas to focus on
4 specific areas/topics:
- Alcohol (including club drugs)
- Fitness/Nutrition
- Healthy Relationships/Sexual Health (including assault)
- Smoking Substances (Tobacco & Marijuana)
In addition, the group decided that stress/depression, culture, and
spirituality are areas that may have a direct impact on our 4 chosen
health areas. Therefore, it will be up to each subgroup to consider
these topics when creating their action plans.
Finally, depending on time & the outcome of each subgroup's action plans,
the group may make recommendations for the remaining health areas
that were discussed in January. The remaining health areas are:
- Life Skills
- Other drugs (may be exempt due to the incorporation of club drugs and
marijuana in the above priority health areas)
- Gain consensus on final "Charge" and "Vision"
The group made edits to its charge, outcomes, and end dates & will forward
the following information to Dr. Johnson and Bill Kummerow (creator of
the Priority Group Webpage more information to come on this topic).
The group proposed the following changes:
- Vision Statement: To have the healthiest campus in the United
States.
- Charge: Develop a campus-wide wellness initiative for students
and employees.
- Outcomes: Create a plan for a multi-faceted program for students,
staff, and faculty focused on healthier living with special
emphasis on alcohol, fitness/nutrition, health relationships/sexual
health, and smoking substances.
- End Date: May 3, 2004
- Establish subgroups by priority health area
Group members chose a priority health area to work on with the hope
that each subgroup would have 3-4 people assigned to each health
area. These subgroups are:
- Alcohol Mark Thompson & Jannette Berkley-Patton
- Fitness/Nutrition Jill Urkoski, Myra Strother, and Michael Myers
- Healthy Relationships/Sexual Health Jaimie Heldstab & Beth Peer
- Smoking Substances Melissa Smith & Rachel Rumple-Comerford
The remaining group members (Ann Brill, Stephen Fawcett, Steve Munch,
Lauren Reinhold and Kristin Scott) will contact Rachel by Monday
with their priority health area interest so each subgroup can schedule
a time to meet before the next large group meeting (which is scheduled
for Thursday, February 19th from 1-2:30 pm).
- Discuss plan development process and timeline (2 handouts please
see Jannette if you need these handouts)
Jannette reviewed the action planning guide which we have adapted
from the "Work Group on Health Promotion & Community Development" manual.
In addition, Jannette reviewed the proposed timeline for completing
various steps of the action planning guide handout.

to begin their priority health area subgroup work.
