Wellness Meeting Minutes
Thursday, January 22, 2004
Thank you for a productive meeting on Thursday, January 22nd. I apologize for not getting this e-mail to you sooner; however, as promised, here is a summary of our meeting and contact information for the person who will be coordinating our next meeting. Please make certain to read this information thoroughly so that you can submit your calendar to the appropriate person and we can get our next meeting scheduled.
Meeting Summary
The first portion of our meeting was dedicated to providing everyone with a working background on how Student Success Priority Groups developed and the role of each committee member. From this point, we discussed research that has been conducted on college campuses (including KU) to assist Student Health Services in identifying priority health areas for our students. At the conclusion of our meeting, we brainstormed a list of priority health areas which we would like to explore as a committee and briefly reviewed a community-based model we hope to use in creating an action plan to address these priority health areas.
"Homework" for Next Meeting
- The group agreed to review the list of priority health areas we brainstormed to ensure these are truly the areas we want to focus our attention on. Question that were posed were: Do we have too many priority areas? Are there any areas of wellness that we are missing? Etc. Our current list includes:
- Tobacco
- Alcohol
- Other Drugs (marijuana/club drugs)
- Health Relationships/Sexual Health
- Stress/Depression (Mental Health)
- Fitness/Nutrition
- Life Skills (e.g. financial/consumerism, etc)
- The next decision we will need to make as a group concerns the population of our focus. Do we want to focus our action plan/initiatives on meeting the needs of our students, staff, and/or faculty?
- I indicated that each committee member will need to submit their "typical" (I use this term loosely!) weekly schedule to an assistant in Dean Johnson's office. Thankfully, Bridget Murphy has agreed to collect everyone's schedule and find a meeting time that works with (hopefully) everyone's schedule. Therefore, please submit your schedule to Bridget via e-mail at bemurphy@ku.edu by this Friday, January 30, 2004 so that we may have another meeting in the very near future.
Finally, for those of you who were unable to print a copy of the report which Jannette and I sent to you in our first e-mail (the document is titled "A Wellness Approach for Improving Health and Quality of Life Among the KU Community"), please let me know and I will be happy to send a hard copy to you via campus mail.
As always, please contact Jannette or me if you have any questions or concerns.
We are very excited about the work that lies ahead of us!
