Student Success Priorities:

DIVERSITY

Increasing and Supporting a Diverse Community
of Students Priority Meeting

Friday, February 13, 2004
1:30 pm
KU Visitor's Center Conference Room

Minutes

Members present: Gina, Lisa, Claudia, Tammara, Michele, Trina, Jake, Andrew, and Santos

Discussion: We will move ahead with our interpretation of the charge.
Ongoing concerns: defining diversity (is there a committee currently working on this for the university?)

Our goals for the work group: to be completed by the deadline

  1. Profile and goals from OAS and Multicultural Recruitment Team
  2. Analyze in terms of what a diversity goal would be in relation to projections
  3. Present 5-10 initiatives that we believe should be implemented

Draft of initiative ideas:

  1. Develop a statement that describes a realistic and desired diverse student population: what is the scope of the meaning of diversity? Which students are included? Find out from other committee/schools what definitions they may be coming up with.
  2. Utilize student Portal to conduct climate surveys and obtain ongoing feedback from students on issues of diversity
  3. Monitor the admissions goals related to Provost’s guidelines: oversight committee
  4. Include opportunities through orientation for students to specify interests and inform us on how they might contribute to diversity at KU
  5. Strengthen outreach and services throughout students’ careers here; not just a recruitment effort—must be a retention effort
  6. Provide clearinghouse (through MRC?) for campus materials and activities, review student support materials to create a consistent message, one that is inclusive and accurate.

ACTION STEPS

Lisa will provide the spreadsheet (two tabs labeled: transfer/freshman and ACT).

Committee members should review and bring to next meeting:

  1. Review the high school projections (link from Claudia)
  2. Review and compare to the projections from KU admissions to the Provost’s goals
  3. Develop a diversity profile for years: 2006, 2011, 2016 (bring to next meeting)
  4. Develop a set of initiatives that will support the goals and projections (bring to next meeting).

Next meeting is February 27th– KU Visitor’s Center Conference Room at 1:30 pm
