1:30 pm Wheat Room, Kansas Union

Minutes

Present: Tammara Durham, Michelle Eodice, Andrew Shoemaker, Trina Ramirez, Eric Grospitch, Marleen Elliott, Corinne Deuel, Gina Lopez, Claudia Mercado, Janice Davis, Lisa Pinamonti, Jake Preston

  1. Reviewed minutes

  2. Introduced new student representatives
              Gina Lopez, Corinne Deuel

  3. Reviewed reports sent out previously
    Multicultural Student Recruitment Plan
Commission on the Status of Ethnic Minorities
Student Senate Minority Recruitment and Retention Committee

  4. Discussion
    • Began discussion on reports
    • Do other Big 12 schools have a multicultural strategy or plan? C. Mercado said OU has a model program that was successful but is currently involved in a lawsuit.
    • Concern about recreating some of the same things these committees have already come up with.
    • Clarification from R.Johnson—the charge for the group can be floating; we can determine how our charge should be.
    • Group discussed a two—part charge — What will our population of color look like in 2,5, 10 years? What do we need to pay attention to in order to meet their needs (climate of institution or services)?
    • Discussion on doing intro survey on application with a question worded "How do you contribute to this diverse campus?" There was additional discussion on whether we can ask this question, and what we would do with the data. We need to have buy—in from different offices and how will we actually use the data. It was noted that applicants should be able to self—select.
    • Question about whether any climate surveys had been done and need for data on climate of KU. Equal Opportunity Office? Endowment survey in 2000? Need to look at when last climate survey was done and should we do another one
    • Question about whom are we looking at for the campus climate survey. A supportive environment for whom? Are we looking for barriers for recruitment/retention
    • Suggestion that survey should include What are your perceptions? Self—report and Qualitative statements. M. Eodice offered to set up survey using website. Specific discussion about survey and where to take a random sample—using OIRP. (Can this be one of our bullet points in our final report *determine the pulse of the campus in terms of climate and *we recommend it be done every five years=ongoing senior survey)
    • Question on do we have state projections for ethnic minority groups — see Board of education website (C.Mercado will email to the group)

  5. The next step?
    • We need to look at what else has been done —T. Durham has copy of latest senior survey; G. Lopez has questions used for housing climate survey and L. Pinamonti will provide other campus climate surveys if she has them.
    • Minutes for next meeting—M. Eodice offered to take minutes
Next meeting scheduled for:
February 13th — KU Visitor's Center Conference Room
