  5. Discussion
    • R. Johnson indicated that date of March 1st was to be used as a guide. However, other priority groups were using April 1st as the deadline date. Committee decided to change deadline to April 1st
    • Discussion began as to what terms have been used by other groups/commissions.
    • What do we mean by a diverse community? Does this include students with disabilities, LGBT students or just students of color/ethnic minority students?
    • How have other reports defined it? Other commissions and other groups.
    • We need to review the material created by previous boards/commissions:
      • Commission on the Status of Ethnic Minorities (Fred Rodriguez)
      • Multicultural Student Recruitment Board (Lisa Pinamonti)
      • Housing-climate study (Eric Grospitch)
      • Student Senate Minority Recruitment and Retention Committee (Marshall Jackson)
    • Discussed determining the dates for profiles-L. Pinamonti indicated that the years used for the profile for the Strategic Recruitment plan priority group were 2006, 2011, 2016 and they were specifically focusing on African American, Asian, Hispanic and Native American students.
    • Need to look at the charge and determine what we mean by a diverse community? Does it include Lesbian/Gay/Bi-sexual/Transgender (LGBT) students and students with disabilities or is it limited to ethnic minority students?
    • Concerns that were raised by the group — need to define what groups are included? If you expand the charge to include groups listed above, how do you recruit them since we can't ask directly about sexual orientation or disability as an example?
      • How do you define a plan?
      • How can you increase a diverse community and show support for that community?
    • Committee determined that our first step is to collect data on what previous commissions have done.
    • After reviewing previous commissions we can determine what definitions we will use
    • Committee asked for projected student of color population for Kansas projected for next few years-see Board of Education
    • Discussed additional discussion about strategies

  6. The next step?
