Assessment Priority Meeting Notes
March 2, 2004

Notes:
Joann reported on her conversations with colleagues at UC-Colorado Springs. Their configuration is somewhat different than KU’s but the lessons learned are helpful.

They suggest:

  • Use the national assessment tools that are available especially the NSSE (www.iub.edu/~nsse) and the College Success Factors survey.
  • Remember to survey to those students who have left the institution. Phone interviews were helpful.
  • The time of year that we survey can impact the data.
  • Access students in capstone courses.
  • Use core classes to survey (can be on-line)
  • It is possible to over-survey and over-focus group students.

Frank reported on the Focus Groups that the old Student Affairs Research Committee did last year. Frank can provide John’s report if specific information is desired. What we did learn was how students learn about the services is as interesting as their impressions of the services. Jonathan noted that most students who do use the services are complimentary.

Joann is going to take John’s report and overlay it on our model to see where there are areas of overlap and convergence. Jane said that she, with some direction from Joann, would find a student to review the model.

There was some discussion about the importance of projecting the characteristics of future students by considering current and future (economic, social, etc) trends, as well as identifying areas of concern from our recent graduates. When we do the assessment and we use students, it is important to survey students that both use and do not use the services.

Frank and Jane will speak with Dr. Roney on Friday (3/5) to confirm her measures of student success that are currently in the model. Jane will call Joann with the results of that conversation so she can complete her work on the “overlay report”.
